Sambalpur Violence: 79 People Arrested So Far; Some Accused Still Absconding

Sambalpur: Over 26 persons were arrested in connection with the stone pelting incident on April 12 and 53 were arrested for violence during the procession in Odisha’s Sambalpur district. According to reports, some of the accused are absconding.

Earlier, the Sambalpur district administration suspended internet service in the city for another 48 hours, informed Collector Ananya Das.

The district administration imposed a curfew until further notice in the town. The decision was taken following violence during a religious rally to mark Hanuman Jayanti.

Sambalpur Sub Collector ordered Curfew under Section 144(1) of the CrPc after receiving input on the current situation prevailing in the city.

No individual or group of people is allowed to come out of their houses during the curfew in the jurisdictional area of Town, Dhanupali, Khetrajpur, Ainthapali, Bareipali, and Sadar – police limits of Sambalpur with immediate effect until further orders, the official notice read.

“However, in emergency for procurement of any essential items may be made during the hours of 8.00 AM to 10.00 AM and 3.30 PM to 5.30 PM,” the official release further read.

“For any medical emergencies, a helpline is hereby declared. Citizens may reach out to the District Headquarters Hospital helpline No.7655800760. It is also to take note that, strict action as per law would be initiated against the violators of this aforementioned order,” the Sub Collector’s notice stated.
