Afghanistan’s Taliban administration has ordered all beauty parlors in the country to be closed down within a month. Taliban government’s morality ministry has passed this order that further reduces access to public places for Afghan women.
“The deadline for the closing of beauty parlors for women is one month,” a spokesperson for the Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and Propagation of Virtue, said on Tuesday.
Despite criticism from foreign governments and UN officials, since its return to power in 2021, the Taliban has curtailed women’s liberty in the country.
In 2022, most girls’ high schools were shut down in Afghanistan. Women were barred from university and public places including bathhouses, gyms and parks were closed to women.
But many beauty salons continued to run in Kabul and other Afghan cities with their signboards and windows covered up. They were providing income to some women. Now all of them will be shut down.
The Taliban administration says it respects women’s rights in accordance with its interpretation of Islamic law and Afghan customs.
