TN Spurious Liquor Death Toll Rises to 18

Chennai: The total number of deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor in two separate incidents in Tamil Nadu increased to 18. Two more deaths due to illicit liquor were reported from Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district, where the death toll went up to 13 on Tuesday.

People died of spurious liquor in the Ekkiyarkuppam fishing hamlet of Marakkanam. The second incident of spurious liquor deaths was reported on Sunday from Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu district where five people died allegedly due to illicit liquor consumption.

According to the police, there was no evidence found of a link between the two incidents.

A man named Amaran has been arrested and spurious liquor seized from his possession has been sent to a forensic laboratory to ascertain the presence of methanol in it.

Tamil Nadu CM Stalin announced Rs 10 lakh to each of the families of the deceased and also announced a compensation of Rs 50,000 each to those hospitalised.
