US Brokers 3-Day Ceasefire in Sudan; Evacuations Gather Speed

Sudan’s battling generals have agreed to a three-day ceasefire after 10 days of fighting that has claimed the lives of over 400 persons. It has also led to a mass exodus of foreign nationals from Sudan. As per reports, the US managed to broker this cease-fire between the warring factions.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Monday, “Following intense negotiation over the past 48 hours, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have agreed to implement a nationwide ceasefire starting at midnight on April 24, to last for 72 hours.”

So far, more than 4,000 people have fled Sudan in evacuations that began on Saturday. US special forces used Chinook helicopters on Sunday to rescue the American diplomats and their families. Britain also launched a similar rescue mission. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said more than 1,000 EU citizens had been taken out during a “long and intense weekend” involving airlift missions by France, Germany and others.
