Wrestlers’ Complaint “Serious: SC Notice to Delhi Police

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to Delhi Police on the complainants’ request seeking an urgent hearing on the petition seeking registration of a police case against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. The apex court posted it for hearing on April 28.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal on Tuesday mentioned before the Supreme Court a petition filed by women wrestlers seeking registration of an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment. Sibal told a Bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud that police are not registering an FIR on their complaint. Sibal added that police personnel can be prosecuted for not registering an FIR as one of the complainants is a minor.

The court also ordered the redaction of the names of the seven complainant wrestlers from judicial records to suppress identities in the sexual harassment case. These seven female wrestlers had moved the top court alleging non-registration of FIR on their sexual harassment charge.

“There are serious allegations made in the petition by wrestlers who have represented India in international games about sexual harassment meted out to them. The matter requires consideration by this court,” a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said.
