Bhitarkanika National Park Reopens Following Successful Saltwater Crocodile Census

Kendrapara: Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district has reopened its gates to visitors after a brief closure from January 5 to 13 for the annual saltwater crocodile census. The census, spanning five ranges, was conducted by teams of Forest Department staff and experts.

This year, there has been a marginal increase in the saltwater crocodile population, with a total of 1,811 estuarine crocodiles identified in Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary and its surrounding areas. This figure represents a slight rise from the 1,793 crocodiles spotted during the previous year’s census.

The census results indicate the region’s ongoing efforts to monitor and conserve the saltwater crocodile population. Visitors can now explore the park and witness the thriving wildlife, contributing to broader conservation awareness.
