3 Labourers Die of Asphyxiation During Septic Tank Work in Odisha’s Cuttack

Cuttack: Three labourers lost their lives due to asphyxiation while working on a septic tank construction at an apartment in Trisulia, Cuttack on Friday. The victims, hailing from West Bengal’s Nadia, were engaged in the task when the incident occurred.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the labourers suffocated while removing the centring from the septic tank, which had an unusually narrow opening.

The workers lost consciousness inside the tank and despite immediate rescue efforts by Baranga Fire Services, two of the labourers were declared dead upon arrival at SCB Medical College and Hospital. The third succumbed to asphyxiation during treatment.

A Fire Service official reported, “The septic tank had a very narrow opening. We had to break through the wall with a drill machine to access the tank. We rescued the labourers in a senseless state, but sadly, they could not be saved.”
