Cuttack: Badambadi police in Cuttack arrested a self-proclaimed godman for allegedly defrauding an issueless couple of over Rs 3 lakh on Monday.

The accused person, identified as Siddheswar Samantaray allegedly defrauded a couple of Rs 3.90 lakh to make the couple bear a child through tantric pujas.

According to the police, one Sangram Das of Jhanjirmangala area on Sunday lodged an FIR at Badambadi police station alleging that one Siddheswar Samantaray by introducing himself as a Tantrik had defrauded him of around Rs 3.90 in instalments to make him bear a child through his wife by doing tantric pujas.

“Sangram Das of Jhanjirmangala Sahi filed an FIR with Badambadi police station alleging that one Siddheswar Samantaray posing as a tantric had defrauded them of around Rs 3.90 lakh to make his wife bear a child. And when upon realizing that they have been duped, they stopped giving money. Then Samantaray threatened to cause them losses by using tantra. As they were scared they lodged an FIR against Samantaray. We have arrested him and he will be forwarded to court,” informed Amarendra Panda, ACP Zone VI, Cuttack.

“Despite consulting several doctors and undergoing various procedures my wife failed to conceive. We were desperate to have a child, a friend introduced us to Samantaray who claimed to get us a child by doing different pujas to nullify the malefic effects of planets,” said Das.

Samantary took money from us on several occasions amounting to around Rs 3.90 lakh within a span of one year to do pujas to get us a child, Das alleged.

“But despite the pujas and medicines given by him my wife failed to concieve. Soon we realized of being duped and lodged a complaint with the Badambadi police on Sunday and they arrested him today,” he said .
