ITR Espionage Case: 2 Central Teams Probing On Suspicion Of International Links

Balasore: In a recent development to the ITR honey trap case, Balasore SP Sagarika Nath said that besides Odisha police, two central teams are probing the case on suspicion of international links.

Intelligence teams of Andhra Pradesh and Air Force have reached Balasore and started investigating the information he had given to the enemy country, she added.

Apart from Baburam, Two-three more people are suspected to be involved in the case. Baburam is also suspected to have received some financial assistance to provide the data.

“The accused has been remanded to police custody for the last two days. During interrogation, some additional information was found. Efforts are on to ascertain the veracity of the information received and the data sent from the mobile,” she informed.

Along with the team of Odisha Police, intelligence teams of Andhra Pradesh and Indian Air Force are involved in the investigation. All the three teams are jointly interrogating the accused, Nath informed.

Six electronic gadgets, including mobile phones and laptops, have been seized from the accused. It will be subjected to forensic and technical analysis. These gadgets will be sent to Delhi or Kolkata for forensic examination, the SP said.

Efforts are on to get more information as the remand period will end on Tuesday.

If required, more remand period will be sought, she said.

The intelligence team from Andhra Pradesh started investigation after it found link of the State in the case.

Baburam, a senior official of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was posted at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Balasore district.

The official was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed at the Chandipur police station, he said.

A case has been filed against him under IPC sections 120A and 120B (criminal conspiracy), besides the Official Secrets Act, police said.

He was allegedly sharing sensitive defence-related information with a Pakistani agent for “sexual as well as monetary gratification”, they said.

WhatsApp chats and sexually explicit photos and videos were found in his phone, which was seized, they added.

In September 2021, five contractual employees of ITR-Chandipur were arrested in another espionage case.
