Noted Freedom Fighter Biswanath Das No More

Jagatsinghpur: Noted freedom fighter Biswanath Das, who is popularly known as Balikuda Gandhi, passed away on Tuesday. He was 105.

According to his family sources, this veteran Gandhian was suffering from age-related ailments for long. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack.

He was resident of Bhagaban Sindhola village under Balikuda tehsil in Jagatsinghpur district. During his student days, ignited by the call of Mahatma Gandhi, he had joined the freedom struggle.

He played a major role in the Quit India movement and was imprisoned during in 1942 and 1943.

In 2012, the then President Pranab Mukherjee had honoured him at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He was honored again by the then President Ram Nath Kovind on the occasion of the 2020 Independence Day.
