Odia Actress Zeena Samal Joins BJD Hours After Quitting BJP Over Ticket Denial

Bhubaneswar: Odia actress Zeena Samal has officially joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) shortly after announcing her resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday.

Reports suggest that Samal’s decision stemmed from her disappointment over being overlooked for a ticket in the upcoming Odisha Assembly elections, specifically for the Bhograi constituency.

The formal induction ceremony took place at Sankha Bhaban in Bhubaneswar, with Rajya Sabha member Sasmit Patra presiding over the event. She cited the BJD’s commitment to respecting women as a key factor in her decision to switch parties. Zeena also acknowledged the influence of Odisha Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik, thanking him for welcoming her into the fold.

The actress had initially sought the BJP ticket for the Bhogarai Assembly seat. However, when the saffron party nominated Asish Patra for the same seat, Zeena opted to part ways with the BJP. She and her husband, Rudra Panigrahi had joined the BJP in March 2023, in the presence of BJP Lok Sabha member Pratap Sarangi.
