Odisha Govt Plans Phase-Wise Liquor Ban

Bhubaneswar: In a politically charged atmosphere, the newly-elected BJP government in Odisha is reportedly planning a phased approach to make the state liquor-free. This follows recent clarifications from the Information & Public Relations (I&PR) department, which refuted claims of a liquor ban from August 15.

However, Nityananda Gond, the Minister of Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, confirmed the government’s intentions to ban liquor in the state. Speaking on the International Day Against Drug Abuse, Gond said, “We cannot continue to encourage liquor sales out of fear of revenue loss. Society is suffering due to liquor addiction.”

Gond highlighted that other states like Bihar, Gujarat, Mizoram, and Nagaland have already implemented government-level alcohol prohibitions. “Our government is committed to following suit. We will discuss the necessary steps with the Excise and other departments to achieve a phased liquor ban in Odisha,” he asserted.

The Minister also mentioned plans to reduce drug consumption, aiming to foster a healthier society.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle substance abuse and its detrimental effects on society.
