Odisha Plans to Remove Traffic Signals, Explores Alternative Solutions

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is considering innovative solutions to alleviate traffic congestion in urban areas. Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Tuesday announced plans to potentially replace traffic lights with alternative infrastructure.

A review meeting was held in Bhubaneswar to discuss traffic management strategies. Proposed alternatives include constructing overbridges and approach roads. The goal is to reduce commute times and improve traffic flow for residents. Minister Mahapatra emphasized the importance of smooth road communication for the public. The department will conduct further discussions before finalizing any decisions.

Road safety expert Subrata Nanda cautioned that implementing such changes could be challenging. He noted that similar traffic issues exist globally, and space constraints may limit infrastructure options. Nanda stressed that proper planning and timing are crucial, and addressing illegal parking and road encroachment is essential.

Nanda suggested that while the proposal has merit, it may be a long-term solution. He recommended immediate action to clear road encroachments as a more immediate step to improve traffic flow.
