Prathamastami Special: Shree Jagannath’s ‘Enduri Pitha’ Recipe

Bhubaneswar: Prathamastami is an Odia festival celebrated every year for the prosperity and long life of the firstborn child of the family.

On this day, the firstborn is worshipped and honored. They are gifted with new clothes and served various types of pitha (pancakes). One of these special pancakes is ‘Enduri Pitha’. It is offered to Shree Jagannath and his siblings for breakfast today. This special steamed rice dumpling, stuffed with coconut and molasses filling, and wrapped in turmeric leaves are prepared particularly on Prathamastami, once a year and is offered to god.

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

  1. Rice (arua chaula)-2cups (400g)
  2. Urad daal (biri dali) 1 & 1/2 cups (300g)
  3. Grated coconut-1
  4. Jaggery-1bowl (100g)
  5. Chhena-1bowl
  6. Cardamom powder & Black pepper powder-1tsp
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Turmeric leaf

Method:

-Take 1/2 cup of Black Gram and one cup of Rice, mix and soak it in water overnight, grind it, and put some salt as per taste.

-Take some grated coconut, and jaggery and let the jaggery get melt, and blend with the grated coconut. Add black pepper and a pinch of salt.

-Take a sheet of Turmeric Leaf, put some batter on the center of the sheet and top it with the jaggery and coconut mixture.

-Cover it firmly and put it over the cloth to get cook in the steam.

-After 20 minutes, serve it on a plate.
