Rare black tiger in Odisha National Park; see how the tiger is leaving its mark in its territory

Bhubaneswar: Rare black tiger in Odisha. The tiger is said to have spotted in the Shimilipal national Park. The 15-second clip, posted on Twitter on International Tiger Day, showed the tiger leaving a mark on the tree. In this rare sighting, a black tiger is seen marking its territory. Sharing the clip, Indian Forest Service officer Susanta Nanda wrote that a rare melanistic tiger was spotted leaving marks on tree to mark its territory on International Tiger day.

The reason behind the great black markings of melanistic tigers is a mutation in the tiger’s gene. This change causes the tigers’ distinctive black markings to spread out over the orange background. Variations in this particular gene cause similar changes in color in other species of tigers, including cheetah.

Scientists speculate that the tiger in Similipal may have come from a small established population or breed. These tigers live in an isolated area of eastern India and interactions between them and other tiger populations are rare. However, such populations are likely to become extinct within a short period of time. Another IFS officer, Parveen Kaswan, retweeted the clip and provided additional information about the rare species of tiger. He wrote that this rare tiger was first discovered in Similipal Tiger Reserve in 2007.
