Former Minister Ganeswar Behera Joins BJD in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Former Congress leader and ex-minister Ganeswar Behera on Sunday joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha, adding to the growing list of defections from opposition parties to the regional powerhouse. Behera’s induction into the BJD took place at a ceremony held at Shankha Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.

Having resigned from the Congress just five days ago, Behera’s move highlights a trend of prominent leaders shifting allegiance to the BJD. Notable figures such as former working president of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) Chiranjib Biswal, former minister Surendra Singh Bhoi, sitting MLA Adhiran Panigrahi, ex-MLA K Surya Rao, and Ansuman Mohanty have all recently joined the BJD ranks.

Speculation surrounds Behera’s potential candidacy in the upcoming elections, with indications suggesting he may contest from the Kendrapara Assembly constituency, which is reserved for scheduled caste candidates. In the 2019 polls, Behera contested from Kendrapara on the Congress ticket but was defeated by BJD’s Shashi Bhusan Behera.
