Political parties should not be stopped from making promises: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a note on the issue of promises and free gifts given by political parties during elections. Chief Justice NV Ramana said after hearing this issue that political parties should not be stopped from these areas.

He said, it is the duty of the government to provide facilities. But it is important to see how the public money is properly invested in this direction. This issue is very complex. It is also an issue whether the court can weigh all these issues. It is worth noting that a petition was filed by the DMK party on Tuesday in the case of providing free materials during the election.

It was argued in the said petition that the welfare schemes run by the State Governments cannot be termed as free gifts even if they have broad and multifaceted objectives. However, after hearing the matter, the court made this remark. On the other hand, the Solicitor General said that the case could not be heard tomorrow as the proposal made by Kapil Sibal and Vikas Singh had not come. Hansaria, who filed the petition on behalf of DMK, said, “The court should consider these proposals and form a committee.” He told the court that since India is a welfare state, welfare measures should be taken.
