World Cup Final: Travis Head Slams Iconic Ton as Australia Thrash India By 6 Wickets To Win 6th Title

Ahmedabad: Australia secured a remarkable victory by defeating tournament favourites India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad. The calm and experienced Australian team clinched their sixth title by winning the match by six wickets at the packed Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday evening.

Despite facing early setbacks, losing three wickets, Australia batsmen displayed resilience. A stellar performance by Travis Head, who scored 137 runs off 120 balls, and Marnus Labuschagne’s contribution of 58 runs from 110 balls ensured Australia’s comfortable victory.

Captain Pat Cummins led his team to success, surprising many as they were not initially considered favourites. The journey began over six weeks ago when Australia faced India in Chennai on October 8. Noteworthy was India’s initial success with star batsmen Virat Kohli and KL Rahul steering the team to their first win.

In the final showdown at Ahmedabad, India’s batting collapse resulted in a modest target of 241 runs at the end of 50 overs. Mitchell Starc’s brilliant fast bowling, claiming figures of 3-55 in his 10 overs, played a crucial role in restricting India’s batting powerhouse. Captain Cummins and Josh Hazlewood also made significant contributions, ending with figures of 2-34 and 2-60 in their respective 10 overs.

Despite a spirited start by India’s captain Rohit Sharma, who scored 47 runs from 31 balls, only Kohli and Rahul posed a threat to the Australian bowlers on a pitch that balanced the contest between bat and ball.

This triumph marks Australia’s sixth title, extending their lead over other title-winning countries. The gap widens as Australia now holds seven titles, while India has two, along with the West Indies. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England have each won the title once. Australia’s last World Cup victory was on home soil in 2015.
