Gujarat’s Drona Desai Smashes 498 Runs in Under-19 Cup, Joins Indian Cricket Elite

Gandhinagar: 18-year-old Drona Desai made history during the Diwan Ballubhai Cup under-19 tournament in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on Tuesday. Representing St Xavier’s (Loyola), Desai scored an astonishing 498 runs off 320 balls against JL English School at the Shivay cricket ground. His innings included seven sixes and 86 boundaries, leading his team to an overwhelming win by an innings and 712 runs. JL English School, playing with 10 players after a teammate arrived late, was no match for Desai’s marathon knock.

With this achievement, Desai joins an elite group of Indian cricketers who have crossed the 498-run mark in an innings. Other members of this exclusive list include Pranav Dhanawade (1009*), Prithvi Shaw (546), Dr Havewalla (515), Chamanlal (506*) and Arman Jaffer (498).

Desai revealed to The Indian Express that he was unaware he was nearing the 500-run milestone. “There was no scoreboard, and my team didn’t inform me. I just played my stroke and got out. But I’m happy with my score,” he said.

Desai’s journey began at the age of seven, inspired by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. His father recognised his potential and arranged for him to train under renowned coach Jayprakash Patel, who has guided over 40 cricketers. Desai mentioned that from 8th to 12th standard, he only attended school for exams, dedicating the rest of his time to cricket.

Previously, Desai represented Gujarat at the Under-14 level. His current performance could pave the way for a spot in the Under-19 team.
