Mumbai: Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar criticized the national selectors for overlooking Sarfaraz Khan’s inclusion in the two-match Test series against the West Indies. Gavaskar expressed his disappointment, highlighting Sarfaraz’s impressive performances in the Indian domestic circuit as one of the most prolific run-scorers.
Sarfaraz Khan boasts an exceptional record in first-class cricket, having played 37 matches and amassing 3505 runs at an impressive average of 79.65. His remarkable tally includes 13 centuries and nine half-centuries, with a top score of 301 not out against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2020 match at the Wankhede Stadium.
Gavaskar emphasized the importance of effective communication between selectors and players, urging them to convey Sarfaraz’s potential in Test cricket. He believes that even if Sarfaraz might not secure a spot in the playing XI, his inclusion in the team would serve as recognition for his outstanding performances. Gavaskar further suggested that if the selectors fail to acknowledge Sarfaraz’s efforts, he should consider focusing solely on the Indian Premier League (IPL) rather than playing Ranji Trophy matches.
In addition to his domestic success, Sarfaraz has also made valuable contributions to India A. He recently represented the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2023 IPL edition, showcasing his skills on the big stage.
The first Test of India’s tour of the West Indies is set to commence on July 12 at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica. The second Test will take place at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, starting on Thursday, July 20.
