Rohit Sharma Joins Elite Club; Second Indian to Accomplish Monumental T20 Feat

Mumbai: The Mumbai Indians delivered a commanding performance, securing a resounding eight-wicket triumph over the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, thus keeping their playoff aspirations alive.

In pursuit of a challenging target of 201 runs, MI comfortably reached the finish line in a mere 18 overs, courtesy of a remarkable maiden IPL century by Cameron Green. Alongside Green, skipper Rohit Sharma also played a pivotal role in the chase, smashing 56 runs off just 27 balls, significantly contributing to the team’s victory. The day proved to be a memorable one for Sharma as he achieved two significant milestones during the match.

Rohit Sharma surpassed the 11,000-run mark in the T20 format, becoming only the second Indian batsman to accomplish this rare feat. The only other Indian in this elite group is Virat Kohli, who has amassed 11,864 runs.

Additionally, Sharma reached a milestone of his own by completing 5,021 runs for the Mumbai Indians, making him the second player to achieve the remarkable feat of scoring over 5,000 runs for a single franchise. Kohli stands as the only other player to achieve this feat, having amassed 7,162 runs for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

In the match itself, Mumbai Indians comfortably chased down the target of 201 with 12 balls and eight wickets to spare, accumulating 16 points from 14 matches. However, their fate hangs in the balance, awaiting the outcome of the match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Gujarat Titans, being played in Bengaluru, which is currently experiencing rain.

If the contest between RCB and GT is washed out, Mumbai will secure a spot in the final four. Alternatively, if the hosts emerge victorious, they will qualify based on their superior Net Run Rate (NRR). Currently, MI possesses an NRR of -0.044, while RCB maintains a superior NRR of +0.180.

Given their lower NRR, Mumbai faced the daunting task of scoring 201 runs in just 11.4 overs or 70 balls if they were to surpass RCB’s position on the table.

During his unbeaten 100 off just 47 balls, Cameron Green struck an impressive total of eight fours and eight sixes. He partnered with Suryakumar Yadav (25 not out) to forge an unbroken third-wicket stand of 53 runs, guiding MI to a comprehensive victory.
