Tennis Legend Roger Federer Announces Retirement, To Hang Up Boots After Laver Cup 2022

Bern: Tennis legend Roger Federer on Thursday announced his retirement from professional tennis. Federer informed of his decision with a post on his Twitter handle.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will hang up his boots after the Laver Cup in London this year. He has won his first grand slam in the year 2003 when he won the Wimbledon title.

He has since gone on to win 6 Australian Opens, 1 French Open, 8 Wimbledon and 5 US Open titles. He has been struggling with a knee injury for a long time.

“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event,” he said in a statement posted on his Twitter account.

“I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career. The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in Grand Slams or on the tour,” the statement read.

Federer found the most success on grass, winning as many as 8 Wimbledon titles. He won 6 Australian Open titles and 5 US Open trophies. Federer’s only Grand Slam title on the red dirt came in 2009.
