Be Careful! Providing Fake Identity for SIM Might Result in Jail

A person faces a year in jail or a fine of Rs. 50,000 if they provide a fictitious identity for purchasing SIM cards or provide a fraudulent identity on social sites.

New Delhi: Now it will be exceedingly difficult for those who purchase SIM cards using a fake identity and present that identity on social media platforms. A person faces a year in jail or a fine of Rs. 50,000 if they provide a fictitious identity for purchasing SIM cards or provide a fraudulent identity on social sites.

These clauses were included in the draft of the Telecommunication Bill by the Department of Telecommunications, acting on behalf of the nation’s Telecom Ministry. These proposals have been made in an effort to curb online financial fraud and other illicit behaviours.

If a telecom user discloses his false identity, he may be punished with up to a year in prison, a fine of 50,000 rupees, or the suspension of his telecom service. Alternatively, all three of these penalties may be imposed at once. It is considered a cognizable offense, thus in these circumstances, a police officer may make an arrest without a warrant and open an inquiry without the consent of the judge.
