From School Teacher to CM, This Is The Journey of Mohan Charan Majhi

Bhubaneswar: Mohan Charan Majhi, a key tribal leader of the BJP in Odisha will take over as the 15th Chief Minister of the state on Wednesday.

Majhi hails from a common tribal family and has links with the RSS for long. He is from Raikala village in the tribal-dominated and mineral-rich Keonjhar district.

Before taking up a political career, he served as a teacher at a Saraswati Sishu Mandir school. He delved into active politics in 1997 and was elected as a sarpanch in Keonjhar district.

Majhi, a graduate, continued as the village head from 1997 to 2000. He was the secretary of the BJP’s Adivasi Morcha before being elected as an MLA from Keonjhar in 2000. He was again elected from Keonjhar Assembly seat in 2004, 2019, and 2024.

In the 2024 assembly elections, he defeated BJD’s Mina Majhi. In the last Odisha assembly, he was the opposition chief whip. ,

In his first statement after being named Chief Minister, Majhi attributed the BJP’s majority in Odisha to the blessings of Lord Jagannath and expressed gratitude to the 4.5 crore Odias who voted for change.

The BJP won in 78 out of the 147 assembly seats in Odisha in the last Assembly polls.
