Triple Amputee from Goa Makes History by Conquering Mount Everest Base Camp

Panaji: In an inspiring feat of determination and resilience, a triple amputee from Goa achieved the remarkable milestone of trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp. Overcoming physical disabilities, harsh weather conditions, and health challenges, 30-year-old Tinkesh Kaushik embarked on a week-long journey that culminated in his triumphant arrival at the Base Camp, located at an altitude of 17,598 feet (5,364 meters) above sea level.

Kaushik, who lost both legs below the knees and one hand following an electrocution accident at age nine, embarked on this inspiring journey with unwavering determination.

Setting off on May 4, Kaushik faced numerous obstacles during the trek to the Base Camp. Despite the gruelling first day, he remained resolute. “I promised myself I would do it, and nothing could stop me,” Kaushik stated during a press conference on Wednesday.

Kaushik, a fitness coach by profession, initially underestimated the trek’s difficulty but soon realized the challenges posed by his prosthetic limbs and the altitude. “The preparation was painful, especially on the first day. My fitness background made me think it would be easier,” he admitted.

Throughout the trek, Kaushik battled mountain sickness, experiencing severe headaches, vomiting, and low oxygen levels. However, his mental strength propelled him forward. “I faced health issues, but my strong desire to set an example for others with disabilities kept me going,” he explained.

On May 11, Kaushik proudly hoisted the Indian tricolour at the Everest Base Camp. “It was an emotional moment for me,” he shared. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Kaushik celebrated his achievement, expressing gratitude to his supporters and emphasizing the importance of mental strength in overcoming challenges.

Avelino D’Souza, Chief of the Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG), lauded Kaushik’s achievement, stating that he has made Goa proud.
