Manipur Violence: Curfew Imposed, Army Deployed, 4000 Persons Shifted, Internet Cut

Imphal: Large-scale violence broke out in Manipur during a tribal agitation in Manipur. To check the escalation of violence, the Army and Assam Rifles were deployed in violence-hit regions of the state. Around 4000 people were rescued by the defence personnel from the violence-hit areas. The rescue operation still continues.

Mobile internet services were suspended across the state for five days.

Government officials claimed that joint operation by Army, Assam Rifles, and the state police could be arrested violence by Thursday morning. Flag marches are being conducted to keep the situation under control.

The violence sparked off on Wednesday during ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ called up by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district. Clashes between tribals and non-tribals broke out during this rally. Police had to fire tear gas shells to control the situation.

As a precautionary measure, curfew was imposed in non-tribal-dominated Imphal West, Kakching, Thoubal, Jiribam, and Bishnupur districts and tribal-dominated Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Tengnoupal districts.
