Kerala Boat Tragedy: Cops Take Boat Owner Into Custody

Malappuram: A houseboat capsized and drowned near the Thoovaltheeram beach in Kerala’s Malappuram district, killing 22 people, including women and children on Sunday. The police have now taken the owner of the boat into custody.

Nazar, the boat’s owner, was taken into custody in Kozhikode.

The owner of the boat, which allegedly lacked permission to operate, was the subject of a complaint that Tanur Police had filed. The owner was absconding since the accident.

The boat capsized along an estuary not far from the Thoovaltheeram beach in Tanur at around 7:30 pm on Sunday.

The Kerala government announced a judicial probe into the incident after the boat disaster. A 10 lakh rupee compensation for the deceased’s family members was also declared by the state government.

In the meantime, a case about the tourist boat accident was independently filed by the State Human Rights Commission. K Baiju Nath, a judicial member of the Human Rights Commission, gave instructions to the chief port surveyor of Alappuzha and the collector of the Malappuram District to produce a report within ten days.
