NHRC Directs Odisha Police to Take Appropriate Action in Subhalaxmi Death Case in 8 Weeks

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) directed the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner to initiate proper action in the sensational Subhalaxmi death case within 8 weeks.

Hearing a petition filed by one Subrat Kumar Dash, the NHRC stated, “The complaint should be transmitted to the concerned authority for appropriate action. The authority concerned is directed to take appropriate action within eight weeks associating the complainant/victim and to inform him/her of the action taken in the matter.”

Subhalaxmi Sahu, who was studying in higher secondary classes in the Kamala Nehru Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, was found hanging inside a room located on Puri-Cuttack Road in the capital city on August 4.

Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) had taken suo motu cognizance of the case, and asked Bhubaneswar DCP to conduct a thorough probe in this matter and submit a report.

The post-mortem report revealed that Subhalaxmi died due to asphyxiation. The Bhubaneswar DCP had also confirmed that she died by suicide.
