Rahul Gandhi Appointed Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been named the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, as confirmed by party MP KC Venugopal. The appointment was formalised through a letter from Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab.

Rahul Gandhi follows in the footsteps of his parents, Sonia and Rajiv Gandhi, becoming the third member of the Gandhi family to hold this position. The decision came after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolved on June 9 to appoint him to the role. Initially, Gandhi requested some time to consider the offer before accepting it.

This appointment marks a comeback for the Congress party, which has reclaimed the Leader of Opposition post. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress nearly doubled its seat count to 99, up from 52 in 2019. This is a notable recovery from the 2014 elections when the party secured only 44 seats.

Despite being the second-largest party in Parliament in 2014 and 2019, Congress did not meet the 10% seat threshold required to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi was sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha. He concluded his oath-taking ceremony with the words “Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhan,” holding a copy of the Constitution.
