Maker of Deepfake Videos of Amitabh Bachchan Denied Interim Relief by Mumbai Court

Mumbai: The owner of a Rishikesh-based Ayurvedic drug manufacturing firm was denied interim protection from arrest for allegedly creating and posting a deepfake video of Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan.

The Sessions Court denied interim protection from arrest to the accused Abhijit Patil.

In May 2024, the Bollywood actor filed a case with the cyber police of Mumbai when he came across deepfake videos on social media showing him promoting products of Patil’s company.

The accused allegedly created and posted obscene deepfake videos of Bachchan to sell his medicines for sexual health.

To dodge arrest, the accused had moved anticipatory bail before a sessions court in Mumbai.

The prosecution argued that the accused had cheated the public and the actor’s fans “by creating a deepfake and using obscene language”.

A notice was sent to Patil to appear before the cyber police on July 4, but despite coming to the city, he didn’t appear before the police.
