Snake Causes Major Power Outage In US, Over 11,000 Families Left Without Electricity

On August 10 night, a major power outage in Virginia of the US left around 11,700 customers without electricity.

Dominion Energy officials reported that the power disruption was caused by a snake that made an entry to a transformer and led to a major short circuit.

Crews restored power to all affected customers within an hour and a half. It was found that the snake caused the outage when it slithered into a high-voltage area and then came into contact with a transformer and around 9.15 pm on August 10 night. According to 13 NBC News reports, Dominion Energy crews restored service to all customers by around 10:30 pm.

The breed of the snake responsible for the power outage has not been identified. It is suspected that the snake may be an eastern garter snake or eastern rat snake found in the area. According to People Magazine, in May, there were four snake-induced power outages near Nashville.
