102-Year-Old British Woman Becomes Oldest to Skydive, Raises £10,000 for Charity

London: A 102-year-old British woman celebrated her birthday in an extraordinary way this year. On August 25, Manette Baillie, a former member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service during World War II, made history by becoming the oldest woman to skydive.

Baillie took the leap with UK Parachuting Services Ltd as part of a charity event, aiming to raise funds for Benhall’s village hall, the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which saved her son’s life after a 1969 diving accident. Her efforts have already raised over £10,000, with a goal of £30,000, inspiring others to contribute.

After her 7,000-foot jump over Beccles Airfield in East Anglia, Baillie described the experience as “breathless” and admitted to closing her eyes tightly during the jump. She encouraged others approaching their senior years to stay active and not give up, attributing her vitality to staying fit and healthy.

This isn’t Baillie’s first venture into thrilling activities. For her 100th birthday, she set another record by driving a Ferrari at 130 mph around Silverstone. Speaking on Radio 4, she shared her fearless attitude, stating, “I really don’t do fear.”

Baillie was inspired to skydive after learning that a friend’s 85-year-old father had done the same. Her bravery even caught the attention of Prince William, who sent a personal note of admiration, acknowledging her adventurous spirit.
