7-Yr-Old Elephant Dies at Chandaka Training Centre Due to Suspected Infection

Bhubaneswar: A seven-year-old elephant named Mama died on Wednesday at Damapada Kumarakhunti Elephant Training Centre at Chandaka.

According to forest officials, the deceased pachyderm was suspected to be infected by the herpes virus. The real cause of its death will be ascertained after the autopsy.

Three other elephants at the training centre are also infected with herpes. All these elephants are under treatment.

Mama was born in 2017. The baby elephant got separated from its mother in the Tangi forest region in Khurda district. Forest officials had rescued the baby elephant and had transferred it to the Nandankanan Zoological Park. Mama was later shifted to the training centre for Kumki training.
