Rape Convict Godman Asaram Out of Jail on Parole, Leaves for Pune for Ayurveda Treatment

Jaipur: Self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu, who is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case, came out of Jophpur Central Jail in Rajasthan on parole on Tuesday. He was granted seven-day parole by the Rajasthan High Court.

After coming out of the Jodhpur jail after 11 years, Asaram left for Pune for ayurveda treatment at the Madhavbaug Hospital in the Khopoli area on the outskirts of Pune.

His parole will be counted from the time when he is admitted to the hospital.

The high court has given clear directives that Asaram will not be allowed to meet anyone during his treatment.

The private room where Asaram will stay in the hospital will be under round clock vigil by the police. Asaram will pay for the entire cost incurred for his treatment and travel.

Asaram was convicted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other offences by a trial court in 2018 for raping a minor girl.

In March this year, the Supreme Court had refused to entertain a plea filed by Asaram seeking suspension of sentence on medical grounds.

In January 2023, a court in Gujarat had convicted Asaram in a decade-old rape case involving a woman disciple, and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The victim had accused Asaram of repeatedly raping her at his ashram in 2013.
