Lioness Bijli Gives Birth to 5 Cubs at Nandankanan Zoo

Bhubaneswar: A lioness named Bijli has given birth to five cubs at the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) in Bhubaneswar

With the birth of these 5 cubs, the total number of lions in Nandankanan rose to 26.

Bijli was brought to Nandankanan from Indore Zoo in 2020 2020. It is now 9 years old.

Bijili has given birth for the fourth time. This time the litter got sired by the lion Samrat. The lioness and her cubs are under round the clock surveillance through CCTV cameras.

Lioness Bijli became a mother for the first time in 2021. Then it birth to 3 cubs. Out of them 2 died and the third cub was not accepted by the mother and was reared by Nandankanan employees.

The second litter of the lioness was in March 2022 when it produced a cub named Kamini. In November 2022, Bijli delivered 5 cubs. Out of them, one died. Two of these cubs were transferred to Alipore Zoo on August 27.
