Odisha to Witness Very Heavy Rainfall Today as Deep Depression Lingers Over West Bengal

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the Deep Depression over Gangetic West Bengal is expected to retain its intensity until forenoon on Sunday.

According to the IMD, the system moved westward at a speed of 8 kmph over the past six hours. As of 5:30 am, it was located around 40 km west-northwest of Kolkata, 130 km east-southeast of Bankura, 190 km east of Jamshedpur, and 290 km east-southeast of Ranchi. The depression is predicted to move further westward across Gangetic West Bengal, maintaining its intensity until the forenoon.

Following this, it is expected to gradually weaken into a depression as it moves across Jharkhand and northern Chhattisgarh over the next 24 hours.

Odisha is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) under the system’s influence on Sunday, with isolated heavy rainfall predicted from September 15 to 17.

Earlier, the IMD had issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur on September 15. Other districts, including Mayurbhanj, Bargarh, Sonepur, Angul, Keonjhar, and Deogarh, may also witness heavy rainfall at isolated places.

On Monday (September 16), Sundargarh district may see isolated heavy downpours.
