New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved ISRO’s new moon mission, “Chandrayaan-4,” aimed at developing and demonstrating the technologies required for sending Indian astronauts to the moon and ensuring their safe return to Earth.
Scheduled for completion within 36 months, the Chandrayaan-4 mission will lay the groundwork for India’s manned lunar landing by 2040. Key technologies, such as docking, undocking, lunar landing, safe re-entry, and lunar sample collection and analysis, will be tested during the mission, according to an official statement.
The total cost for the Chandrayaan-4 mission is estimated at ₹2,104.06 crore, and ISRO will lead the development of the spacecraft and its launch, with contributions from industry and academia. All critical technologies will be developed indigenously.
