Odisha Activist Advocates for Global Paid Menstrual Leave at UNGA

Bhubaneswar: Odisha-based social activist Ranjeeta Priyadarshini made a compelling case for paid menstrual leave during the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Her address is part of her ongoing global advocacy to challenge societal taboos around menstruation and fight for women’s rights.

In her speech, Priyadarshini acknowledged over 40 Prime Ministers who have already implemented paid menstrual leave policies, praising their progressive approach. She stressed the importance of such policies, stating, “Paid period leave ensures that all working women can take 1-2 days off during their periods without fear of salary deductions.”

Notably, Odisha became the third state in India to introduce menstrual leave for women in both government and private sectors. Announced on August 15, this policy allows women to take a one-day leave on either the first or second day of their menstrual cycle.
