Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Expels 10 Doctors Over Threat Culture Allegations

Kolkata: In a significant move stemming from an investigation into allegations of a threatening environment, money laundering and ragging, the internal council of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has expelled ten doctors.

These individuals have been accused of fostering an atmosphere of fear and harassment within the institution.

The decision was made during a college council meeting, which concluded that the doctors would be permanently removed from the hostel, with official notifications dispatched to their residences. Alongside the expulsions, 59 other individuals, including interns, students and house staff, have been temporarily suspended.

Among those expelled are Saurabh Pal, Ashish Pandey (who was arrested by the CBI), Abhishek Sen, Ayushree Thapa, Nirjan Bagchi, Sarif Hasan, Nilagni Debnath, Amarendra Singh, Satpal Singh and Tanveer Ahmed Kazi.

They have been instructed to vacate their hostel accommodations within 72 hours. Furthermore, their names will be submitted to the State Medical Council for potential review and cancellation of their medical registration certificates.

The investigation was initiated following numerous complaints detailing instances of physical and mental harassment, including ragging, threats of expulsion and academic sabotage.

Several students reported being coerced into joining a specific political party, facing harassment for their refusal to participate in rallies and meetings.

The accused are reportedly associated with former principal Sandeep Ghosh, with allegations suggesting students were threatened with failing grades for non-compliance. Additional claims include being compelled to fetch alcohol late at night and subjecting junior colleagues to humiliation in communal spaces.

In response to several complaints from junior doctors, hospital authorities identified 59 individuals involved in these practices, with 43 of them expelled from the hostel. The council has pledged to continue its investigation and take further necessary actions.

This crackdown on misconduct follows the tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital on August 9, which has prompted complaints regarding a culture of intimidation at several government hospitals across West Bengal.
