Noel Tata Appointed Chairman of Tata Trusts, Succeeding Ratan Tata

Mumbai: Noel Tata, half-brother of the late Ratan Tata, has been named Chairman of Tata Trusts following a board meeting in Mumbai on Friday.

This appointment comes after Ratan Tata, the iconic industrialist, passed away at the age of 86 in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday. Ratan Tata’s demise marks the end of an era in Indian industry, where he transformed Tata Group into a global conglomerate.

Noel Tata, a key figure in Tata Group’s expansion since the early 2000s, takes over the leadership of Tata Trusts, the umbrella body overseeing 14 Tata Trusts, including the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

Noel, Vice Chairman of Tata Steel and Titan, has held several leadership positions within the group. He previously served as Managing Director of Tata International, driving its turnover from $500 million to over $3 billion during his tenure from 2010 to 2021. As Managing Director of Trent Ltd, he expanded the company’s retail network from a single store to over 700 locations.

The leadership of Tata Trusts is crucial as the Trusts hold over 50% of Tata Sons’ ownership. Noel succeeds Ratan Tata, who revolutionised the family-owned business and elevated its global presence. Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, and Mehli Mistry remain members of Tata Trusts’ executive committee.

Ratan Tata’s brother, Jimmy Tata, remains outside the family business and leads a quiet life in Mumbai.
