14 Dead, 9 Missing As Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Floods, Landslides in Nepal

Kathmandu: Intense monsoon rains in Nepal have unleashed flash floods and landslides, claiming at least 14 lives across the country, with search efforts underway for nine missing individuals, police reported on Sunday. The severe weather has also affected neighbouring India and downstream Bangladesh, causing extensive damage and impacting millions.

“Police are working with various agencies and local residents to locate the missing,” said Nepalese police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki.

Each year, the June to September monsoon brings significant loss of life and property in South Asia, with recent years showing a rise in fatal floods and landslides. Experts attribute this to climate change and increased road construction.

Since Thursday, heavy rains have been battering parts of Nepal, prompting disaster authorities to issue warnings for flash floods in several rivers. Reports indicate widespread inundation in multiple lowland districts bordering India.

Just last month, 14 people in Nepal lost their lives to violent storms that caused landslides, lightning strikes, and flooding.
