21-Month-Old Baby’s Organ Donation to Save Lives

Bhubaneswar: The parents of a 21-month-old boy, who was declared brain dead, donated his organs to save lives of others. The parents of the baby boy, Gouri Shankar Panigrahi and Sharmistha Panigrahi donated the organs of the baby, who suffered septic shock and was declared brain dead on Saturday at the Sum Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Pratyush was admitted to the hospital and was suffering from meningitis.

At the request of parents, the hospital authorities passed on the information to the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) who, in turn, got in touch with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

A team of doctors from the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar harvested the liver which was flown to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi to be transplanted to a baby. The police prepared a green corridor for the smooth passage of the liver to the Biju Patnaik Airport for its airlift.

The kidneys of the baby were taken to a city-based hospital for another patient transplant.
