58% Rise in Student Suicide Rate in Odisha in 3 Years

Bhubaneswar: In comparison to 2021, suicide among students in Odisha rose by 58% in 2023.

Giving a written reply to a question from BJD MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Odisha Assembly that the number of suicide cases among students has increased from 119 in 2021 to 173 in 2022 and then gone up to 189 in 2023.

In this period more number of girl students committed suicide in comparison to the boys. A total of 263 girl students ended their lives during these three years, while 218 boys died by suicide in this period.

From 2021 to 2023, Odisha has reported 17,778 suicide cases. The chief minister informed that 5,649 suicide cases were registered in 2021, 6,140 in 2022 and 5,989 in 2023.
