All Hyundai Cars Will Have Six Airbags

New Delhi: All models of vehicles manufactured by Hyundai Motor India would now come with six airbags as standard.

Announcing it on Tuesday, the automaker declared that it has decided for voluntary participation in the recently introduced Bharat NCAP with 3 models to begin with, and more models to follow.

Under the Bharat NCAP programme, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their vehicles tested as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197. Based on the performance of the car in the tests, the vehicle will be awarded star ratings on a scale of 0-5, for adult occupants (AOP) and child occupants (COP).

Taking a big leap in the safety journey, the company has now decided to standardise six airbags in all models and all variants, he noted.

On September 13, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that the government has no proposal to make six airbags mandatory for cars.

In 2022, the Union government proposed to implement the six airbags safety norms from October 2023 to enhance the safety of people traveling in cars by amending the Central Motors Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989.

But speaking at an event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Gadkari said, “We don’t want to make six airbags rule for cars mandatory.”

Airbags for both front seats are mandatory in vehicles manufactured on and after April 1, 2021. An airbag prevents serious injuries during an accident.
