At Least 8 Dead as Severe Flooding, Landslides Ravage Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across Andhra Pradesh, causing severe flooding, landslides and significant disruptions to daily life. Neighbouring Telangana is also on high alert as the coastal regions brace for more downpours due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal.

In Andhra Pradesh, at least eight people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents. The worst-hit areas include Vijayawada, Machilipatnam and Amaravati. Among the victims, five were killed in a landslide in Mogalrajapuram, Vijayawada, where heavy rain triggered large boulders to crash into two houses. In Guntur district, a teacher and two students died when their car was swept away by an overflowing stream.

Rescue operations are in full swing, with national and state disaster relief forces working alongside police to evacuate residents from low-lying areas. Around 80 people have been rescued so far. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has cancelled all his engagements to oversee the relief efforts and has sanctioned Rs 3 crore for each district to aid in recovery.

The flooding has also severely disrupted train services on the Vijayawada-Warangal and Vijayawada-Khammam routes, as submerged tracks and overflowing streams have forced authorities to halt train movements.

In response to the crisis, the Andhra Pradesh government has set up a state-level control room to coordinate rescue operations and provide emergency medical services. Citizens are urged to contact +919032384168 for assistance. A dedicated medical team will be on call until September 3.

The India Meteorological Department reports that the depression, which crossed the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam, is expected to continue its path northwestwards, affecting Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Telangana is preparing for further heavy rainfall. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed all government departments to stay vigilant, particularly in low-lying areas. Relief camps are being established, and district-level control rooms have been activated to manage the situation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Hyderabad and Vijayawada to assist with rescue and relief efforts.
