Centre Bans Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Declares it Terrorist Organisation

New Delhi: The Central government on Thursday officially banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT), a global Islamist group founded in Jerusalem in 1953, citing its aim to establish an Islamic state and caliphate worldwide, including in India, through jihad and terrorism.

In its notification, the Union Home Ministry said HuT is actively involved in radicalising and recruiting young individuals to join terrorist organisations such as ISIS and also raises funds for terror-related activities.

Home Minister Amit Shah’s office, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), reiterated the government’s commitment to fighting terrorism. ”

Pursuing PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, the MHA today declared ‘Hizb-Ut-Tahrir’ as a ‘Terrorist Organisation’. The outfit is involved in various acts of terror, including radicalising the gullible youths to join terrorist organisations and raise funds for terror activities, posing a serious threat to the national security and sovereignty of India. The Modi government is committed to securing Bharat by dealing the forces of terror with an iron fist,” the tweet read.

The home ministry further noted that HuT promotes terrorism via social media platforms, encrypted apps and ‘Dawah’ meetings, targeting young people for recruitment. The group seeks to overthrow democratically elected governments and replace them with an Islamic state, endangering India’s democratic fabric and internal security.

The ban, enforced under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, applies to HuT and all its affiliated and front organisations.
