Devendra Fadnavis Offers to Resign as Dy CM Following BJP’s Lok Sabha Debacle in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has offered to resign following the BJP’s disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha elections.

Fadnavis, who also served as the state’s former Chief Minister, expressed his desire to focus on strengthening the party for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls scheduled later this year.

During a media briefing, Fadnavis took responsibility for the party’s results in Maharashtra and urged the BJP leadership to relieve him of his governmental duties. He emphasised the need for dedicated efforts towards the party’s preparations for the November Assembly elections.

Earlier, the Maharashtra BJP unit conducted a meeting to assess the party’s performance, attended by Fadnavis, state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and other senior leaders. The BJP-led NDA fell short of its target, securing only nine out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, compared to 23 seats in the 2019 polls.

In contrast, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) performed strongly, winning 30 seats. The Congress witnessed a significant increase in its seat tally, securing 13 seats, while the Shiv Sena and NCP won nine and eight seats, respectively.
