Hathras Stampede Death Toll Climbs to 116; UP Announces ₹2L Ex-Gratia

Hathras (UP): A religious gathering in Hathras district on Tuesday descended into chaos as a stampede erupted, claiming the lives of 116 people, including numerous women and children and leaving many others injured.

The incident occurred at a ‘satsang’ – a religious congregation – held in Pulrai village.

The victims were transported to hospitals in Hathras and the adjacent Etah district.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede and instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures. He announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the dead and ₹50,000 each for the injured.

Senior police officer Rajesh Kumar Singh informed the media that the tragedy occurred at a religious gathering in a village in Hathras district. The overcrowded event, organized by the Manav Mangal Milan Sadbhavna Samagam Committee, likely caused the fatal stampede.

Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic scene. One attendee described, “We had come for the satsang. It was a large crowd. Once the satsang ended, we started leaving. The exit was narrow. As we tried to exit towards the field, suddenly, a commotion started, and we didn’t know what to do. Many people have died.” Another witness added, “After the satsang ended, everyone came out. Outside, the road was built at a height with a drain below. One after the other, people started falling into it. Some people got crushed.”
