Paris Olympics, Hockey: Harmanpreet’s Last-Minute Goal Helps India Secure 1-1 Draw Vs Argentina

Paris: Last-minute heroics from captain Harmanpreet Singh salvaged a 1-1 draw for India against Argentina in their second Pool B match at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Monday.

The result extended India’s unbeaten run in the tournament, following their opening victory over New Zealand.

Argentina drew first blood through a field goal by Lucas Martinez in the second quarter, putting India on the back foot. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, the Indian team struggled to penetrate the Argentine defence.

However, with time running out, Harmanpreet Singh stepped up to convert a penalty corner, ensuring India salvaged a crucial point. The draw marked the second instance of a tied match between India and Argentina in hockey history, with the first occurring in 2004.

India’s next challenge will be against Ireland, a match identified as a potential turning point in their campaign. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh emphasized the need for improved finishing while acknowledging the stiff competition in the pool.

With the top four teams from each pool advancing to the quarterfinals, India will be aiming for consistent performances to secure a place in the knockout stages.
