At least 2 Killed, Several Injured As Train Runs Over People Walking On Track In Jharkhand’s Jamtara

Ranchi: At least two people were killed and several others injured in a train accident near Kalajharia Railway Station in Jamtara district, Jharkhand on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred when two individuals walking on the tracks were struck by a train, approximately 2 kilometres away from passing train number 12254. Initial reports suggested a fire onboard the train, but officials clarified there was no fire involved.

“There is no incident of fire. As of now, two deaths have been confirmed,” said Kaushik Mitra, CPRO, Eastern Railway. The deceased were confirmed not to be passengers but individuals walking on the railway tracks.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for a speedy recovery for the injured. He assured that the administration is actively involved in relief and rescue operations at the site.

In response to the accident, a 3-member JAG committee has been formed to investigate the matter.

Jamtara SDM Anant Kumar stated, “The train stopped near the Kalajharia railway crossing, and some passengers disembarked from the wrong side, coming into the path of another approaching train. RPF and district police are conducting search operations, and two bodies have been recovered so far.”

Rescue efforts are ongoing at the accident site. Anant Kumar further added, “Two bodies have been recovered. We have requested the Railways to establish a helpline number. The cause of the incident will be determined following an investigation.”
